Ferruccio Laviani is an Italian designer born in Cremona in 1960. His work began to arise in 1990 from the design and architectural movement of Memphis group.

Early Studies and the Opening of the Studio
Ferruccio Laviani, born inCremona(Italy) in1960, began his formative years studying at theInternational Professional Institute of Art and Craftsin Cremona, where he graduated in1978. He later attended theFaculty of Architecture at the Politecnicoin Milan – where he received his degree in1986– while also attending at the same time theScuola Politecnicadi Design, in Milan, from1982to1984.
In1983he started working forMichele De Lucchi. They became partners in1986until1991, whenLaviani decides to open his own studio in Milan.

The Lighting Design
Laviani’s work mainly focuses onProduct Design, Interior Design, art direction and graphics.
He is mostly known for the manufacturing of industrial design objects, especiallylampsandlighting systems, which are realized employingclear and coloured plastic materials.
One of his best known lightning designs is probably theBourgie Lamp, inspired by theBaroque Styleand realised intransparent polycarbonate, it was commercialised in2004byKartell.

Since1991Ferruccio Lavian has been theArt Director for Kartell; he has covered the same role for companies the like ofFlos, De Padova, Foscarini, Moroso, Society (Limonta), Emmemobili.He designs retail spaces, set-ups, offices, and houses for privates, as well as furniture. Among his clients, there are brands likeCassina, Dolce& Gabbana, Dada, Molteni & C., Barovier & Toso, Piper, Heidsieck, Missoni, Citroen, Hansgrohe, Martini e Rossi, Swarovski, Veuve Cliquot, Moët Hennessy, Marazzi Group, La Rinascente, Zara, Habitat,andSamsung.

Laviani’s Achievements and Exhibitions
In2008an exhibition was dedicated to the lamps he designed for Kartell and was set up atMetropol Dolce & Gabbanaspace in Milan. Bourgie and Take lamps designed for Kartell are part of the permanent Collection of IMA, Indianapolis Museum of Art (USA), and many of his products have been featured in museums and shows all over the world.
